PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
TECHNICAL:
Process Control
Automation (2003)
Provided automation
and Human Machine Interface (HMI) programming support for a new manufacturing
plant. This plant manufacturers aerogel insulating blankets for use in
high tech and industrial applications.
The
control system
included a central control room SCADA system employing a CIMPLICITY HMI Server
with an additional Viewer station, five Series 90-30 PLC's, and interfaces to
a wide range of plant equipment. The system controlled over 100
directional control valves, 30 automatic proportioning valves, 25 pressure
vessels, and accompanying support equipment including variable speed drives,
300 pressure, level, and temperature instruments, .boilers, and cooling
systems.
Hydro Station –
Commissioning Support (2002)
Supported the
commissioning of a new automation system and hydraulic actuator controlling
two 2-MW generators.
Hydro Station –
Automation / HMI System Programming (2002)
Programmed a GE Fanuc
90-30 PLC and CIMPLICITY HMI operator interface system to control two 3-MW
generators and related equipment.
Project included interfacing to existing Woodward mechanical governors and
existing SCADA system. System
allowed fully unattended operation, remote control, and automatic water level
control.
Hydro Station –
Governor / Automation System Programming (2002-03)
Programmed eight AB
SLC 500’s & PanelView 550’s to control seven hydro-electric governors and
related equipment. System
automated all turbine/generator control and alarms functions, governor speed
and load regulation, auto
start/stopped units, interfaced with existing SCADA RTU, and communicated with
a high-level water level control system via an Ethernet Network.
Project included coordination of seven PLC’s (one per unit) and a
shared automatic synchronizing system.
A particular
challenge on this project was the remote location and schedule for project
commissioning. This plant is located on the Exploits River in Bishop's
Falls, Newfoundland. Due to scheduling restrictions commissioning and
installation was performed during the winter of 2002-2003 under extreme
weather conditions. Commissioning of the control and hydraulic systems
as well as electrical control installation was supported by Casco Systems end
to end, culminating in the commissioning of six new American Hydro Seagull
horizontal 3MW turbine/generator units and the reconditioning of a seventh
existing unit. When completed the plant was able to be run remotely from
the clients SCADA control center, providing a reliable, cost-effective power
plant.
Power System Transfer
Switching Control System Programming (2002)
Designed & configured
a PanelMate PC-based operator interface; programmed AB SLC 500 to AB
PowerMonitoring II Remote I/O Block logic; and programmed logic for SLC to SLC
Ethernet communications scheme as part of a team which designed, developed,
and installed an automated switching and monitoring system for a 11.5kV
university campus power system.
PLC Program
Conversion (2002)
Converted ladder
logic program originally written for a Series One PLC to a new VersaMax PLC
platform. Project involved
determining how the original program worked and creating a new program with
matching functionality for water level control.
Hydro Station
Electronic Actuator Control (2002)
Designed and
programmed a GE Fanuc 90-30 & Maple Systems OIT based electronic actuator
control. The new system provided
off-line speed regulation and online gate position control of a hydroelectric
turbine. System was designed to
replace an existing digital governor with a simple to configure, reliable
system.
34.5 kV Line
Section PLC/SCADA (2002)
Programmed Series
90-30 PLC, PanelMate OIT, and SCADA communication interface to add control and
alarm functions for Sections 25 & 77, as well as related breakers.
34.5kV Capacitor Bank
Addition (2001)
Designed electrical control system and programmed associated GE Fanuc 90-30
PLC to control four capacitor banks.
System provided automatic control of four 34.5 kV capacitor banks and
circuit switchers; high voltage tripping of cap banks; and remote SCADA
interface.
Hydro Station Fish
Elevator (2001)
Programmed and
commissioned GE Fanuc 90-30 PLC logic and Wonderware InTouch SCADA/HMI system
to automate a fish elevator and associated water control system.
This fully automated system controlled large 2’ and 3’ modulating
valves to provide attraction water through a fish passageway at specific flow
rates and velocities. As fish are
attracted by this water flow, they are automatically captured and then lifted
over the dam, allowing upstream passage for Atlantic Salmon and other species.
Involvement included all aspects of PLC and HMI system including motion
control, operator interface, safety, and process control.
Diesel Generator Unit
Control System (2001)
Modified an existing
Allen Bradley SLC 500 program and RS View HMI system to add control and
operator interface functions for a diesel generator.
Dock Pump Remote
Control System (2001)
Developed a wireless
remote control system to control ship to shore pumping operations at multiple
locations. Project included
custom design of a novel “Emergency Stop” wireless system in addition to
typical Start/Stop functions.
Project resulted in cost savings in excess of $100,000 by reducing piping,
wiring, and installation expenses.
Fuel Additive Control
System (2001)
Designed a fuel additive
control system which allows tank farm operators to select an injection rate
and total quantity. System
automatically controls additive injection as fuel is pumped from oil tankers
to a storage facility.
Al Mussaib, Iraq
Substation Automation (2004)
Developed CIMPLICITY HMI
SCADA system for a 400 kV substation being constructed at the largest
generating station in Iraq. The Substation Integration System provides local
monitoring and breaker control functions for five breaker and a half bays,
including GSU Transformers T1-T5; Breakers 52-1 thru 52-15; Transmission Lines
L1-L4 and Bus 1 & 2.
The system is comprised of
GE Fanuc’s CIMPLICITY HMI Plant Edition Graphical User Interface and
Schweitzer SEL-2030 Data Concentrators. The HMI software acts as a ModBus
Serial RTU Master and retrieves station status information from intelligent
electronic devices via three SEL-2030 data concentrators. The SEL-2030’s poll
the station’s protective relays and meters for target, analog, status, and
metering data. This data is then read from the 2030’s by the HMI system and
displayed in numerical and graphical formats.
This system was developed
and factory tested in under 2 months to meet an aggressive shipping schedule.
Following a rapid software development process the system was shop tested
concurrently with final control room wiring.
345 kV Substation
Reclosing and Annunciation System (2000)
Planned, programmed,
and commissioned a GE Fanuc 90-30 PLC based automatic reclosing system for a
nine breaker substation bus; implemented PLC based SCADA interface; designed
station annunciator logic including a local PanelMate operator interface.
115/345 kV Cap
Bank Automation & Control Systems (2000/1)
Programmed and
assisted with the commissioning of a GE Fanuc 90-30 PLC based Capacitor Bank
control system at two 115/345 kV substations.
Each system provided automatic control of two 115kV capacitor banks and
circuit switchers; high voltage backup tripping of both cap banks; and SCADA
interface.
Capacitor Bank
Automation and Control System
(2000/1)
Similar to the
projects listed above, the Mason project also involved the implementation of a
90-30 PLC based intelligent SCADA interface which allowed the PLC to emulate a
Remote Terminal Unit.
